Recommended route for Granton to BioQuarter tram - Edinburgh Council
www.edinburgh.gov.uk

On Thursday (1 February) Transport and Environment Committee will hear about a recommended north – south tram line, which would extend the existing network between the Airport and Newhaven. This would run through the city centre via Roseburn then on to North and South Bridge, Clerk Street and Minto Street to Cameron Toll, before following the A7 to the BioQuarter. Further consideration is being given to potential future routes into neighbouring local authorities.

How did Nottingham do it?

Does anyone know where I can access any resources on how Nottingham developed its public transport netowork to what it is now? It is arguably the 3rd best system in the UK (behind Manchester and London) despite being the 9th largest city. With austerity getting worse in this country, I wonder if there's anything worth learning about how to establish good public transport on a budget. Maybe similar sized cities like Leicester or even bigger like Leeds can adopt some of the strategies that made Nottingham into an easy place to travel around without a car.

Why we can't have nice cities

Gutted that this article did not contain the electrifying utterance by Sunak that driving at 20mph is against British standards. Plenty of other guff, though.

Easier to just walk

😮‍💨 Today, to keep things simple, I didn't even bother trying to catch a bus. I saw two the whole time I was out, going the other way. It's like a skeleton service since a month ago. I can't see how it's going to keep going. 🛣️

FoE + Leeds Uni Evidence Huge Bus Cuts (Eng/Wales, since 2008)
www.theguardian.com

"The data found urban areas outside the UK capital had an average of 14 buses an hour, whereas in London the hourly average was 120." - by 'urban areas', what size? Would have to look at their paper itself, but I can't find it so far. Where I'm living, even 10 years ago we had about 8 buses within 5 mins walk from home, and now there are 3. And they aren't spread out evenly timewise, which would probably be impossible to attain along their entire routes. But it results in a poorer service overall. Mike Childs, head of science, policy and research at Friends of the Earth, said: “To reduce pollution and cut emissions, we need the government to invest in our crumbling public transport system to make it far easier for people to use their car less and switch to greener ways to travel, like buses, trains and cycling.” Well we know that, but... 🚏 🚌 😢

Local Bus-Service Cuts

It's two weeks since our local bus-services were shredded. Routes were discontinued and frequency reduced. We thought that would consolidate the remaining services regarding reliability. ::: spoiler spoiler _ But it's all gone crazy! __ :::

Green buses - stats?

I've been trying, and failing, to find any published stats out there about how many bus operators, or municipalities etc., have made any progress on upgrading their fleets with low-emission vehicles (electric, hybrid or hydrogen). Does anybody know if this information exists out there anywhere? I cannot express the degree to which I don't want to figure it out myself!

UK Transport or Urban Planning content
youtube.com

I'm sure I'm not the only one to have enjoyed the recent boom on YouTube of urban planning and transport content from the likes of NJB, citynerd and citybeautiful. Not to mention the one of videos from others like Adam something etc. However they all either have an NA focus or a worldwide focus and I've not been able to find something similar regarding the UK of any quality. There's Gareth Dennis' podcast but it's a bit too difficult to engage with for non pros. Any thoughts or should I start my own channel?!

Does anyone else have to stop thinking about HS2, because it's so infuriating that it's been gutted?

From a grand project encompassing most of England's major cities, improving connections up to Scotland and most importantly, reducing congestion on the West Coast Mainline. To a line from Old Oak Common, to Birmingham. Total. We need to be working on HS3 and HS4 right now, not cutting HS2 back to the bare minimum. Makes me so angry.
