I'm not sure if the Tampa area is also dealing with this, but over where I live, it's going to rain for 4 days in a row before the hurricane lands.

While there are free shelters, those tend to fill up pretty quickly. There's also a guilt associated with calling them for help if you have a secure place to stay, since homeless people and those with vulnerable mobile homes/trailers/RVs are among those that need them the most.

Most people would absolutely need to bust out the credit card and go into debt to evacuate, and go even further into debt if they want a place where their car doesn't risk getting flooded. While it's illegal to jack up prices for water and gas during a hurricane, as far as I've seen hotels are usually free game, especially as we're getting closer to the holiday season. If anyone even bothers to report them later, they can just say they were planning on raising prices for Halloween events anyway. Add in the fact that many people don't get paid time off, so that's an extra couple of days of lost wages. Yesterday would have been the day to say fuck it and whip out your card, as I imagine today that the cheapest and safest Airbnb/hotels are all booked up. Surely many of them were already half booked with tourists, since many tourism guides say you can avoid hurricanes as long as you visit in the fall. (Hurricane season actually ends Nov 30th, a fact that might become much more relevant in the next few years.) Canceling toll charges is obviously pennies compared to the rest of the cost, anyone that acts like that's enough is a deeply unserious individual.

The roads will probably be pretty clogged if you travel north today. I do feel a little bad for saying not to travel south yesterday, as some people on here have gone that route. They probably won't deal with as much traffic as they would have been otherwise. My anxiety insists that you're cornering yourself traveling south, but honestly as long as you're mainland and not next door to a swamp, you're probably safe. Good luck with gas if you're out on the road today. Being stuck in your car during a hurricane is a nightmare that I hope no one here experiences.

If there's one silver lining of the storm, it's that the heat is actually pretty manageable. Heat stroke should be way down compared to a normal Aug/Sept hurricane. It might even cause repairs and the power to come back quicker if workers are just a little less exhausted working 12 hour days outside. Prep extra ice for your fridge and fill your bathtubs with water tomorrow. Good luck out there.

While the cat is almost guaranteed to be cut down due to northern wind shear by the time it gets to Florida, just a reminder that hurricane Katrina was only a cat 3 when it landed in Louisiana.

Just in case any Floridians need to hear this:

If you're going to evacuate, please do it today. The roads will be hell Tuesday and I imagine most places will be sold out of gas by then. General rule of thumb for hurricane evacuation is to either travel north, mainland, or a combination of the two. So please don't go to Miami, especially since there's still a chance that the storm could verge towards southern Florida. And if you're already mainland, I wouldn't travel too far for a hotel if you need one. Gas might take up to a week to be back to normal stock. It might be worth a little extra money to get a hotel with a multilevel parking garage (Because let's face it, you're probably getting into credit card debt over this sudden expense either way right?). Tip extra if they only do valet and ask them to park your car on a higher level. It could save your car from being flooded.

And if you're procrastinating on prepping, just a heads-up: I'm mainland and water was already sold out in the big box stores yesterday. Smaller places like corner stores (CVS/Walgreens), gas stations and maybe even liquor stores might still have some, but I'd get that done today if you need it. Go to the dingy, less traveled stores for better odds. Anything else.... oh yeah, regardless of whether you're evacuating, you probably have food in your fridge and freezer right? You know those plastic quart containers take out places use for soup? Those are also great for filling with water and freezing at least 24 hours ahead of time. It'll keep your freezer cold for 1-2 extra days depending on how many you prep. They can also be moved to the fridge after the power goes out, assuming you stayed at home.

Yeah my bar is real low for the general public, I know. I guess compared to the mask off chuds, this guy blended into the vaguely progressive, liberal background of the general metro area. Yesterday I found out a coworker who was seemingly progressive follows the Daily Wire and Babylon Bee on social media, including on an account that couldn't have been made anymore than a year and a half ago.

Yeah, this is the same coworker that I found out goes to a fake progressive Christian church a couple months ago, so I basically had a moment.

On one hand, as someone with autism I'm almost impressed by the masking skills and brainworm wrangling this chud must summon every in-office day. On the other... wow yeah this is why you can't really make friends at work. Too many wolves in sheep's clothing. It's a bad habit of mine to think more kindly of people I've spent large quantities of time with, but I'm actually really grateful in times like these that overall I'm a jaded and alienated person because revealing too much about myself could have absolutely cost me my job.

On a more positive note, I do find it super funny that some chuds feel the need to do this even though the majority of people working there are also chuds. I guess leftism and general anti-capitalist sentiment really has been exploding in the USA over the last half a decade.
