Wait... Ronald Reagan didn't "didn't do any of [add government]" just because no new "three letter'd" agencies got founded under his tenure. In 1982 (or 83... I forget and am drunk right now), he almost doubled spending for the Department of Defense.

Metra is more of a commuter system than a metro system... but when looking at systems like San Francisco's BART, the line between a metro and a commuter railway gets blurry.

I think one of the bigger things keeping metro rolling stock from using double decker units is the need to go underground. Increased height means larger tunnels or deeper cuts and that can get cost prohibitive. This is especially the case when simply lengthening the tunneling needed for longer station boxes/platforms to support higher capacity single deck trains is less costly.

American here but, from what I understand of Pan-European politics generally, it's more of an attempt to unify everyone else and not necessarily to draw away far-right voters.

I'm here in Georgia, USA. The small towns in my state, those well outside the major metro suburbs, are either emptying out OR the state is bringing in non-union factory and data center jobs to dominate the local economy with the promise of jobs and economic revitalization. These companies are given huge tax incentives to build (or relocate) and thus contribute nothing to local coffers directly (necessitating higher property and sales taxes on locals). Currently, there's a car plant being built near where I live. The locals in the rural areas were shocked to find out after construction began that their water wells might stop working as the factory and it's subsequent suppliers setting up in the area will be draining the county dry... the state said they could. They're out of pocket to drill deeper wells and the state doesn't care... at the state level, they've actually made it harder (legally through environmental review) for local municipalities to direct the development of water infrastructure but easier for private developers (who have fewer reviews to go through) to just build whatever water infrastructure they see fit. Meanwhile, back in town, a handful of out of state multibillion dollar corporations are buying up any and all real estate that isn't nailed down and renting it back to us at exorbitant prices.

Quick reminder: The Nazi German government emptied out Eastern European towns and villages taken by the Wehrmacht during various campaigns, most notably Operation Barbarossa, for resettlement of "pure" Germans to those occupied lands (called Lebensraum)... this started almost literally once these occupied towns and villages were far enough from the front lines. Also, the whole point of the US Government's genocidal forced march of native tribes, often referred to as the Tail of Tears, was to clear said native tribes out so the Southern aristocracy could seize the land for plantations worked by chattel slaves... whole swaths of what is today Florida, Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi were settled by whites as a result.

Many a "populist" (read: Fascist or proto-Fascist) operate their politics in this manner. Promise either cheap land (or, at the very least, housing) to the workers and others by committing what is, on it's face, a genocide. There's more modern examples (two in particular, going on right this minute for all the world to see), but I don't want to get the ban-hammer so I won't name them directly (I forgot to check the instance in which I am commenting before doing so, but not taking my chances).

Hey now... simple sandwiches are awesome. I make tomato sandwiches all the time. It's just a thick slice of tomato (with salt and pepper) on toast with a slice of sharp cheddar cheese and mayonnaise (Dukes, only ever Dukes). You can put bacon on it if you want to get fancy.

It's a nice and simple snack.

When you're the one in the household with the job that makes actual money, threats of "leave and your fired" can make you do unreasonable things. This irrationality can only be alleviated by collective bargaining and unionization... the employees standing up and saying "nope, there's a flash flood predicted tomorrow, we're not going to be coming in." Remember, these folks are working hard for a wage; their bosses and the owners are making the real money off their labor. All that matters to the company is the profit that could be lost if they shuttered one day for safety's sake.

Shutting the factory down for a little rain and wind? That could effect output and the bottom line... can't have that... I'm gonna need you to put your life at risk for our wealth or you can start looking for other work. Work that might not pay this well/have health insurance and other benefits you family needs to survive. Everyone who lives through it gets a pizza party!

The danger of the transporter is not really talked about in TOS, outside of accidentally sending folks to the Mirror universe. Wait, I'm just realizing... so, on top of possibly causing untimely (not instant enough for my liking) death and nonconsensual cloning, any old transporter can also accidentally create a portal to fully up-and-running interplanetary fascism. It's just a dangerous technology all the way down.

In the first film, "Star Trek: The Motion Picture," a horrific transporter accident occurs in the first act. It's kind of a plot point as the Chief Science Officer (a Vulcan we only briefly meet at Starfleet HQ) is killed along with another poor soul, necessitating Mr. Spock's return to his seat. It's fairly graphic, you hear screaming and see deformed humanoid shapes in the transporter "light show" on the ship's platforms... the transporter technician says "oh no, they're forming" shortly before what's left of them is beamed back down to San Francisco. Starfleet ground control then confirms to Kirk and Co that "what made it back didn't live long."

Later (like only three or four scenes later), we are told that Dr McCoy doesn't want to use the transporter to board the ship -likely because of the obvious inherent danger of the device- but is ordered to beam aboard by Kirk. His worry is then played for laughs... as if not an hour ago two people got melted and died. It's a bizarre shift in tone, only made weirder by the framing of Bones as an old Luddite for being scared to use it.

So, a loca US basedl home school association actually has a football team. They're doing okay in the state rankings (given the circumstances of not being a government backed public school or private donor slash multimillion dollar private school), but I really want to point out the local journalist here. They went out of their way to grab a super local/niche story and, not just report on it but, give it the star treatment. Bro went full NPR voice on an athletic program with like twelve to fifteen students. GOAT.

American comedian Ron White frequently tells a story about how his van was damaged in a comedic way by the technicians at a Sears Automotive Center in Savannah, GA. This week, that Sears Automotive Center is being torn down. While the shopping mall that former Sears location is a part of is otherwise doing well, the Sears has been closed for years. The department store end-cap building and the car service center in its out-parcel property are being demolished to make way for the development of a new apartment complex. A link to Ron preforming the [story](https://youtu.be/P-Hz6QIbCt0?si=ZJ4VjPMtTOHdgM12) for a live audience.

All pictures in the listing seem to be from before the ship's "Margaritaville" makeover, but it's definitely the same boat. The rest of that class has been retired and sent to the breakers. In 2023, it was featured in YouTuber Bright Sun Travels cruise video "[North America's Worst Cruise Ship](https://youtu.be/xVujoz0_dTY?si=RfjOFog2PmizBI6r )." The ship, named the "Margaritaville At Sea Paradise" (at the time of that review), had been purchased second hand and operated by a company called Margaritaville At Sea Cruises (formerly Celebration Cruiseline). All of the Margaritaville and Jimmy Buffett branding was a licensing deal the company made with Buffett's food service and vacations empire. The ship was originally launched in 1991 as the Costa Classica for the Costa Cruises company of Italy (the same one of the Costa Concordia disaster infamy). So, who wants to buy a cruise ship? Not gonna lie to you all... she's got some problems, not least of which is the Jimmy Buffett theming.
