The problem is: these guys aren't foundational to how these companies work. Killing them might cause some confusion, and even make it so the upper management stops squabbling for personal gain for a decade. You'd probably strengthen it.

If, by some miracle, you do cause the whole organization to unravel and split up: you'll likely get a repeat of standard oil, where the new companies combined expanded so much quicker and made so much more profit. Just like how pruning a tree makes it healthier and grow with more vigor.

Better to let the rot start from the roots.

As someone working in Chinese media. It's qualitative. One of the issues is that except for the most prosperous cities, other regions in China have a hard time getting their media sectors of the ground. One reason is due to the government providing relatively lucrative, large and low effort projects, which hamper development. These projects, depending on the committee (and whether or not they want to get bribed and wait out the clock), can just be pigeonholed for months if not years, with no funding reaching these companies. In the meanwhile, these companies don't dare take on bigger projects because "what if we suddenly get the money next month and we have to start". A lot of time and opportunity is squandered, and the staff of these companies take on projects that might not be their right fit, as such you have a problem with specialization and creating task-orientated pipelines that improve quality and completion time.

There are more graduates in media than vacancies. From this year on, the majority of provinces will scrap media studies from most universities that don't have such a specialization.

The issues are systemic, and very much on the quality side of things. China's government puts too much trust in that the quality of its media and thus cultural power will rise with the same amount as their GDP does.

China dominates in scientific adoption and implementation, quality of research (especially scientific collaboration) is still lagging behind. The West still has at least a decade lead on media and culture.

When the intellectual cadres of China were sent to the country side, these wereactivities to bring culture, science and technology, and medical and health care to the rural areas.

When the intellectual cadres of the West get sent to the country side, or wherever, it will be for the purpose of casting away illusions.

Sometimes I wonder whether these chronically online internet leftists are just spoiled suburban kids that don't have the social skills to become influencers and merely turned to leftism because they are too poorly socialized to take the next step.

So it's actually a war over resources, how interesting!
  • Weyland Weyland 4mo ago 100%

The West owns enough potential mines, the problem is that they don't care about developing them. Instead they'll sit on the land for a few years and then sell it on. Also, the problem isn't the availability of the metals but the processing. China does the processing, and as such they have to buy from China.

"Battle for Resources" is only a partial truth. The resources or rather productive forces will remain underdeveloped as long as capitalists can inflate their spreadsheets through the virtual economy and hiking prices in the short term.

Why are so many books utterly and totally lacking in physical descriptions of characters?
  • Weyland Weyland 4mo ago 100%

It's not necessarily the main reason, but it's a reason. Tons of stories, I'd even argue that it's most, don't even venture into someone's sexuality, race and neurotypicality. Readers generally don't care, as long as it isn't shoehorned in just for the sake of ticking boxes because you want to have a vibrant cast.

All these characteristics bring their own baggage with them, and thus conflict. If you're focusing on a story about a parent choosing to move on from losing their partner and having to remarry to make ends meet, sacrifice their own desire for love for the well-being and future prospects of their children, just as an example for conflict. Then giving the character autism, or an ethnicity that's being discriminated against in that society, or any other characteristics; then it might take away from, diminish or even undermine the story you want to tell.

In longer stories you can have different character arcs that allow for more nuanced characters and sub-plots. Weaving all of that together in a cohesive whole is a skill not many writers possess. Heck, if you've ever frequented fiction aggregate websites you'd know that the top user created lists are collections of stories that lack any and all romance.

Request: Give us a sort by "Top Three Days"

I'm not on Lemmy daily, still I'd like to check it out two times a week, but there is currently not a proper way to search per X number of days, it's either one day or one week. Which is odd when you can search by three months, six months and nine months before you get to a year. While I'm happy these options are available, it would make sense to have one extra option between "one day" and "one week". I've stopped checking Reddit more than weekly, however I would still like to visit Lemmy more often, yet it's awkward when you miss a day and then have to sort by week.

[Link to link](https://lemmygrad.ml/post/262239). **Posted into the wrong Lemmy community. Might need to delete+repost.** I seriously don't get it. Why do they try and get people from China-related subreddits/communities to join them if they're going to ban them once they're too vocal? Do they just want to spread a wide net and catch whichever stragglers so they can promote their own form of socialism? Or are these people actively creating these communities and banning anyone who's even half-serious about socialism as to impede the organization of grassroots movements?

They only defend China when it's the West attacking them, but it seems they won't support China on its own merit. China is seemingly merely a backdrop for their own political project. They also did a lazy job on debunking, but that's an unrelated grievance.

Have been listening to audiobooks during my bouts of menial labour and have kind of run dry on things to listen to that aren't orthodox Marxism-Leninism. And while [I did make a study guide for myself that covers Orthodox ML & Chinese socialism](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1POzRkMNAOPVR4Nxnwub-C91fmtj3tjrtgJmVvhY7IZQ/edit?usp=sharing) and annotated everything for which I could find an audiobook; I'd still like to learn more about socialism outside of the West and China. This is what I've listened to so far: Writers from the Global South * [Walter Rodney: How Europe Underdeveloped Africa](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mnxHBlh527Q&list=PLFzMvDEJ8BBVwklO-PZON6ZQcm_gZZ4Rp&index=1) * [Ho Chi Minh - Down with Colonialism!](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1rknoapWfM4) * [Eduardo Galeano - Open Veins of Latin America](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pA52otc5S-8) Western Writers about the Global South * [Vincent Bevins: The Jakarta Method](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=obr1vx7NkSo) The recommendations don't have to centre around socialism, and I'd be more than willing to pay for the content. I just don't know what to listen to next. Kind of out of my depth. I did find [Che's on Guerilla Warfare](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FGaXakKZW9E&t=4821s), but I haven't started listening to it yet.

I fail to understand why I keep getting kicked/banned from leftist communities. All I did in that community was talk about the BRI, share my reading list, and fascinate about the guoxin-1: China's first deep-sea fish farm that's as large as an aircraft carrier. As well as talk to another person about how Chinese media could do a better job at outreach. To these self-hating leftists, you can apparently only discuss China when they're dunking on the West. But when you talk about the BRI, Moderate Prosperity, XJP's New Era, or what have you: you get promptly done away with. I now understand why none of the reading lists in Socialist groups don't include anything recent or from the third world. These people are stuck in the past and only want to lever the actions of AES states to support their own moribund view of their world and their socialist causes. I just wanted to make some friends on the left. What's up Western left? [I didn't even post anything](https://www.reddit.com/user/A-V-A-Weyland) ([check REVeddit](https://www.reveddit.com/y/a-v-a-weyland/?showFilters=true)), to that subreddit [and have already been banned](https://i.imgur.com/J1dLBCo.png). Why can I only talk about anything China-related if it's in relationship to the West? Are China and the CPC only a foil to Western leftists to promote their own form of socialism? Does China's success on its road to Socialism give Western leftists a inferiority complex? Do people that talk about Vietnam or other people from the global South experience the same treatment?

Last year the political curriculum for primary and secondary school students in China got updated to better adhere to "Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era" (quite a mouthful, so let's use SWCC). I happened to have their PDFs saved on my drive and thought some of you might be interested in their contents. Even if you can't read Chinese it's still worth looking through it as it makes prominent use of imagery (especially the primary grade materials) and many of us (especially in the West) look upon these study materials with envy. One thing that stood out to me is that while there is a chapter dedicated to China's navy and military in the junior high book; said chapter is immediately followed by the chapter on peaceful collaboration and common destiny for humankind, thus making sure to emphasise that China's military might should only be used to defend China's borders and not to intervene in other nations. [Here are the PDFs of the textbooks on my MediaFire drive.

As some of you in the West might know; the newspapers are filled to the brim with the "newly" released stories from Xinjiang. Well, I had an old friend reach out to me and tell me that they are against everything I stand for (supporting China) and that they wish that if/when I go to China I'll be oppressed like the Uyghurs. Before I had a chance to reply I had already been blocked. So I thought to go and check others and whether others had blocked me as well. I now have at least 2 people who deleted me because of anti-China propaganda. And while some of you might say; don't cry over spilt milk ... I do feel like more of a pariah with every day I stay in the West and openly support China. These issues started during COVID. The sheer sinophobia I had to deal with on a daily basis during that time was absolutely sickening, but I mostly just grinned and bare it. Most of my time these last few years (while I wait for borders to reopen) is volunteering my time at a care centre for elderly people. Seeing as most of them have onset dementia I don't really get into arguments with them on China issues, as it's a fool's effort, but the anti-Chinese diatribes in the news have already caused the residents to not want me to come during the first waves of COVID and to not want me to cook Chinese food for them. These people read newspapers religiously and with these latest lies placating multiple pages I got told both today and yesterday that I don't have to care for these specific residents anymore. I'm lucky in that this job isn't a real job in that I don't need it to stay afloat financially, but I still feel really conflicted. I should probably continue volunteering and just help other elders in this complex or other complexes, but I have decided that I won't. Back during COVID, I was able to understand it somewhat that their xenophobia came from the fear of me transmitting COVID to them (because I interact with Chinese people and in their eyes would be more likely to be a carrier). Only this Monday I was literally showing and telling one of these residents, who used to be a farmer, about Chinese seawater rice and talking to them about the olden times and seeing their eyes light up to only be told today that they don't want me to come anymore because I support that very same China. I should feel very bad about leaving the remaining residents I helped, but I'm planning on quitting in a week or 2/3 and from then on I won't put another iota of my time and effort into improving Western society unless it also directly helps the people in the global South. I'm just so tired. EDIT: This is something I posted to get some catharsis, as I don't really have anywhere else to post this without sounding unhinged. Feel free to downvote it.
