Bitwarden Desktop version 2024.10.0 is no longer free software

How different is this to gitlab’s open core model?

That's a really good question that I don't immediately have a satisfying answer to.

There are some differences I can point out though:

    • Gitlab has demonstrated its commitment to keep the core of their product, though limited in features, free and open source. As of now, BW's clients cannot even be compiled without the proprietary SDK anymore.
    • Gitlab was always a permissive license (MIT) and never attempted to subvert its original license terms
    • Gitlab-EE's "closed" core is actually quite open (go read the source code) but still squarely in the proprietary camp because it requires you to have a valid subscription to exercise your freedoms.

    Is this a permanent change?

It'd be quite trivial for them to do in technical terms: Either license the SDK as GPL or stop using it in the clients.

I don't see a reason for them to roll it back though. This was decided long ago and they explicitly decided to stray away from the status quo and make it closed source.

The only thing I could see making them revert this would be public pressure. If they lose a sufficient amount of subscribers over this, that might make them reconsider. Honestly though by that time, the cat's out of the bag and all the public goodwill and trust is gone.
It's honestly a bafflingly bad decision from even just a business perspective. I predict they'll lose at least 20% but likely 30-50% of their subscribers to this.

Is the involvement of investors the root of this?

I find that likely. If it stinks, it's usually something stinky's fault.

Are we overreacting as it doesn’t meet our strict definition of foss?

They are attempting to subvert one of the FOSS licenses held in the highest regard. You cannot really be much more anti than this.

An "honest" switch to completely proprietary licenses with a public announcement months prior would have been easier to accept.

As with all of their services, the back-end is closed-source.

For the purposes of user freedom, it's not that critical as the back-end merely facilitates the storage and synchronisation of encrypted data. This is different from the bitwarden case where they're now including freedom disrespecting code into the most critical part of their software: the clients which handle the unencrypted data.
Fact of the matter remains however that Proton Pass restricts your freedom by not allowing you to self-host it.

If you are fine with not being able to self-host, I'd say it's a good option though. Doubly so if you are already a customer of their other services.
Proton has demonstrated time and time again to act for the benefit of its users in the past decade and I see no incentive for them to stop doing so. I'd estimate a low risk of enshittification for Proton which is high praise for a company of their size.

Keepass isn't really in the same category of product as Bitwarden. The interesting part of bitwarden is that it's ran as a service.

the fact that the two programs communicate using standard protocols does not mean they are one program for purposes of GPLv3

The fact that they would even think about attempting to subvert the GPL (much less actually pulling through with it) makes me think they have stopped being an open source company a while ago.

It would break a lot, require a new API, and devs reworking a lot of programs.

As I understand it, this would have been a perfectly backwards compatible change. You'd only get the events if you explicitly asked for them.

    The Immich app.

Although since it doesn't really function as a full gallery app yet, so I have Fossify gallery installed as a backup to open images in via intent.

I only learned about Aves today and trying it out for the same purpose, I think I like its picture viewer better.

(As are many things in the Linux touchpad experience. Linux desktop developers *really* ought to use a macbook for a little to get a sense for how to do this properly.) This was caused by Firefox' use of GDK3 to implement its windowing and input needs which does not support hold gestures. GDK4 does support them but, as I understand it, a port of Firefox to GDK4 would be a ton of work and there isn't really much desire for it as GDK4 doesn't offer many real advantages over GDK3 as Firefox doesn't use classical GTK widgets or anything and only really uses it for basic input/output primitives. A backport to handle hold gestures in GDK3 too was attempted but, in classic GNOME fashion, it was rejected. The implementation now somehow gets events from the touchpad directly via wayland somehow from what I could gather but if it works, it works. You can try this out in the latest nightly builds.

    Statistically, yes.

::: spoiler spoiler (This is a Joke.)

In simple terms, Large Language Models predict the continuation of a given text word-by-word. The algorithms it uses to do so use a quite gigantic corpus of statistical data and a few other minor factors to predict these words.

The statistical data is quite sophisticated but, in the end, it is merely statistical; a prediction for what is the most likely word given a set of words based on previous data. There is nothing intelligent in "AI" chat bots and the like.

If you ask an LLM chatbot a question, what actually happens is that the LLM predicts the most likely continuation of the question text. In almost all of its training data, what comes after a question will be a sentence that answers the preceding question and there are some other tricks to make it exceedingly likely for an answer to follow a question in chatbot-type LLMs.

However, if its data predicts that the most likely words that come after "What should I put on my Pizza" are "Glue can greatly enhance the taste of Pizza." then that's what it'll output. It doesn't reason about anything or has any sort of storage of facts that it systematically combines to give you a sensible answer, it merely predicts what a sensible answer could be based on what was probable according to the statistical data; it imitates.

If you have some text and want a probable continuation that often occured in texts similar to it, LLMs can be great for that. Though note that if it doesn't have any probable continuation, it will often fall back to an improbable one that is less improbable than all the others. :::

This has not been the case for at least a year or so thanks to graphics pipeline libraries.

Shader comp also only really manifests in frametime spikes, not generally high average frame times.

    Snaps are 👌

Such an obvious feature in retrospect. I added !ddgr to DDG back when I used it because reddit-exclusive results were so commonly useful but adding a bang for each and every website twice does not scale. (I don't need to do that very often these days due to Kagi's personalised ranking but it still happens.)

I wish snaps would stay in the @ syntax though as that'd make them much easier to edit. Perhaps that could be added as an option as it does hurt discoverability a little. @kagihq@mastodon.social

Hello, Kagi Fans! We know it's been a few weeks since our last update, and there's a good reason for that. The entire company took a break from the usual routine to fly to Barcelona, Spain, for our annual retreat - a chance to reenergize and refocus for the exciting journey ahead. [![](https://lemm.ee/api/v3/image_proxy?url=https%3A%2F%2Fkagifeedback.org%2Fassets%2Ffiles%2F2024-10-05%2F1728090499-177024-kagi-team.jpg)](https://kagifeedback.org/assets/files/2024-10-05/1728090499-177024-kagi-team.jpg) But don’t worry, it wasn’t all fun and no work. In fact, we’ve got a pretty exciting update for you today. The retreat gave us fresh inspiration, and we’re ready to bring some of those new ideas to life starting right now. ## Launching the official Kagi Android app We're delighted to announce the launch of the [official Kagi Android app!](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kagi.search&hl=en_US) This marks an important milestone in our mission to make Kagi Search more accessible and encourage more people to try it out. [https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kagi.search](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kagi.search) The app allows users to begin using Kagi Search immediately right from the first launch (**no account needed**!). For those with existing subscriptions, signing in is seamless, enabling access to all Kagi features. Additionally, the app includes **native homescreen widgets**, providing one-click access to search directly from your homescreen. [![](https://lemm.ee/api/v3/image_proxy?url=https%3A%2F%2Fkagifeedback.org%2Fassets%2Ffiles%2F2024-10-10%2F1728592468-556003-image.png)](https://kagifeedback.org/assets/files/2024-10-10/1728592468-556003-image.png) If you use an Android device, go check it out! We've simplified the process of sharing Kagi with your network. Additionally, a recent [EU ruling](https://www.android.com/choicescreen/dma/) presents a significant opportunity for Kagi. Google is now required to include any search engine that meets [specific criteria](https://www.android.com/choicescreen/dma/searchengine/), such as having an app with **over 5,000 installs**, in the default list for Android and Chrome — [install the app](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kagi.search) today and help us meet the criteria! Stay tuned for more exciting updates coming soon! ## Introducing Snaps [Snaps](https://help.kagi.com/kagi/features/snaps.html) are an innovative search operator that allows for site-specific searches directly from the search bar. By simply typing `@` followed by the designated [site bang](https://help.kagi.com/kagi/features/bangs.html), you can limit your search results to a specific website. For example, to search on Reddit or HackerNews, you can enter: - `@r winter boots` which translates to `winter boots site:www.reddit.com` - and `@hn vim emacs` to `vim emacs site:news.ycombinator.com` This feature was made possible thanks to the contribution of our user [@tuesday](https://kagifeedback.org/u/tuesday) ( [](https://kagifeedback.org/d/1231)[\#1231](https://kagifeedback.org/d/1231)) on [Kagifeedback](https://kagifeedback.org)! This will work with any bang that Kagi support, including custom bangs you define. [Kagi Bangs](https://github.com/kagisearch/bangs) are open source, we welcome your contributions! ## Universal Summarizer for Chrome [Universal Summarizer](https://kagi.com/summarizer) is one of the most-loved Kagi treats. The extension is now available for Chrome - **[Download it here!](https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/kagi-summarizer/dpaefegpjhgeplnkomgbcmmlffkijbgp)** We had to split it out of Kagi Search extension for Chrome due to rules of the Chrome store. Kagi Universal Summarizer is available to Firefox users via [Kagi Search for Firefox](https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/kagi-search-for-firefox/) and is natively built into the [Orion browser](https://kagi.com/orion). ## The Assistant - 30 day update It's been 30 days since we launched the Assistant, and we're excited to share a range of new updates with you. **Upload functionality**: We're excited to announce that you can now **upload a variety of local files directly to the Assistant**! This new feature allows you to **add multiple files in a single prompt**. Here's a list of supported file types: - Text files: .txt, .md - Rich text documents: .pdf, .docx, .pptx - Tabular data files: .json, .csv, .xlsx, ... - Images: .jpeg, .png, .webp, ... - Audio files: .mp3, .wav, .m4a, ... I just wanted to say that summarize page is a killer feature
  • Atemu Atemu 1w ago 100%

I'm a bit apprehensive towards LLM-generated things in general but I also use this from time to time when I just want a simple fact or get a feeling of whether the page is at all worth visiting.

I limit myself to facts that are trivial to verify or should be very hard for an LLM to get wrong.

If I need to look up some function for example, I'd very quickly find out if it's just hallucination. I also expect them to return the right thing if I expect the result to statistically be the most common thing.

Though if I'm being honest, I'd probably prefer a function to just get an expanded preview with the entire preview text offered by the website for this use-case (or an equivalent plain text extract from the website).

Back when I tried it it was a lot worse for my purposes.

I'd recommend you try both though.

The most important features when handwriting IMHO are selection tools and then being able to manipulate the selected strokes.

Write implements a multitude of selection tools such as lasso which most tools have but much more useful to me were ruled selection which selects based on lines on a ruled paper and path selection which selects every stroke you touch with your selection stroke.

You can then move the selected strokes in a ruled manner, so for example I'd select a whole line of strokes and move them down a few lines. This is incredibly useful and brings many of the freedoms we enjoy in editing text on a computer to handwriting.

Re-flowing using stroke divisors is an amazing feature in theory but I've never been able to make it work reliably enough for my purposes, so I personally disabled that particular feature.

The undo/redo dial is also pretty neat.

Once you actually try to take real notes or solve some mathematical problems, you'll really come to appreciate such features and will dread using any note taking application supposedly made for handwritten notes that does not implement such features.

While that's certainly true, using NixOS usually does not involve many advanced concepts or requires you to understand them.

You can set foo = bar in a .conf file without knowing what a variable is either.

    Proprietary and closed source.

I always wondered why as they never sold it or had any kind of business model around it.

(nixos more or less requires you understand programming syntax for writing your system config)

It's technically not a real programming language but an expression language. The difference is that the former is a series of commands to execute in the specified order to produce arbitrary effects while the latter is a declaration of a set of data. You can think of it like writing a config file i.e. in JSON format.

The syntax isn't really the hard part here. You can learn the basics that comprise 99% of Nix code in a few minutes.
The actually hard part is first figuring out what you even want to do and then second how the NixOS-specific interface for that thing is intended to be used. The former requires general Linux experience and the latter research and problem solving skills.

Write is a handwriting app that works on a lot of platforms including Linux which cannot be said about most handwritten note-taking applications. More information and demo: https://github.com/styluslabs/Write/ I've used it for uni on a Linux tablet/convertible and it worked really quite well and has some nice convenient features for note-taking. The UI looks like it's from android 4.something though ^^' What I really appreciate about it is that its storage format are plain SVG(Z) which are extremely compatible.
