I actually strongly disagree. Many younger people are moving directly into trades, apprenticeship or full time employment because, quite simply, they can't afford tertiary education. Many universities are struggling to get student numbers up.

Yes, you used to be able to walk into a role that took anyone who could turn up and learn, but technological and economic demands mean that its no longer viable. You also used to be able to work full time retail as a sole provider, buy a house and raise a family but those days are long gone.

Welcome to late stage capitalism, globalization, game theory and pure human behavior.

I have 3rd year where I've heard less than 3 people speak all semester, attendance is less than half, and no one does any of the assigned reading - its just pass assessments and get it done.

I think its a hangover from covid teaching, but at the same time I think covid just masked a general indifference from burnout, time constraints and general pressure on existing, to where students can only manage the energy for the bare minimum.

If you don't mind me asking - what country you study in? You called it uni so I assume its not states.

Are you also finding a lot of students just aren't interested in getting involved at Uni anymore? Its just turn up for class (if that), then leave. No discussions, no involvement, no real understanding?

I ask this because I'm also a student, and I think this could be what this person did as well. A degree is just a tick in the yes box for a job interview - its the bare minimum you can get from uni. They likely didn't actually get involved in the topic, talk with fellow students, build their networks and get into it - just passed. Im worried because based on what I see, this is where many current students are going.

Abortion is a horrible medical procedure when you think about it. But guess what:

    • we are horrible people that make it necessary.

    • so is amputation, but its much better than the alternative.

If you're surrounding yourself with ass kisser you're a bad leader anyway. Its the thing people forget about leadership - its not your job to do it. Its your job to provide the vision, inspire it, and facilitate smarter and skilled people to achieve it.

In the case of nations - let's take my New Zealand. Jacinta Adern was an average politician but a great crisis leader. She couldn't stop covid from happening, but she made choices that kept us safe, kept our economy and skills intact, and kept us calm. She didn't do it herself- she gave us the vision, had the right people in the right place, and brought the policies and plan forward. I wouldn't vote for her again as a "peacetime" leader, but strongly wish we could keep her on retainer for the next crisis.

I would disagree with 1 and 3, but I could just be over thinking.

A strong leader can solve all the problems- by developing teamwork, collaboration and understanding, and inspiring others to address these issues.

"Real" citizens are those with citizenship. Doesn't mean residents or illegal residents aren't people or important, just not citizens.

Unfortunately for both we know what fascists actually do.

Id argue they provide a catalyst - renting to those who can't afford to buy yet, but allowing them to still have a place to live. They are needed - no one is going to buy straight out of high school or Uni.

Hes there thing though. They make soo much doing it that 1, people can't afford to live due to high rent and 2, they have pushed the housing market beyond the reach of those who want to buy.

Look, we need the money and fuel is bloody expensive, but I believe we are adding another problem to the next generation and regressing further. The tax sucks, but the benefits were worth it.

Don't know the best way to put this but ill try. As much as I love this country, we have fallen soo far behind. I don't want to get to political, but I think Labour tried to fix it in one way, now Nat will try the other. Neither will work in the time they have. We always prided ourselves on our past accomplishments- women vote, Hillary, Rutherford, Nuclear Free, Maori Batallion - and what we are as a country - massive dairy producers, amazing tourist destination, friendly people. But we have dwelled on it too long and got complacent. Our desire to repeat our past success has made us miss opportunities that require years of investment, and meant we are now in a cultural and economic hole that will be increasingly difficult, expensive and time consuming to get ourselves out from. We have a tiny population and limited housing in an empty country where people have limited desire and finances for kids. Massive farms that produce income for a few overseas investors or historic families. Massively increasing inflation and cost of living due to our long supply chains and small industry base, especially compared to overseas. Falling education at a time we needs teachers, medical persons, engineers and tradies... unis are slashing courses, councils are running out of money, and overseas investors will funnel more out of the country. I just want others thoughts around this - I have multiple ideas and theories, but I want to hear from you all.

Hi all, Reddit refugee here. I've been following hfy for a number of years and am invested quite heavily in a number of stories. I usually read on mobile on my lunch break, but with rif going and the shocking app it's replaced with I can no longer do so - just log in via computer every week or so to catch up. What I am interested in is seeing if any coders here are able to make a bot that pulls ongoing stories from r/hfy when they are updated (first contact, TFTR.etc) and ask the authors if they are ok with it being automatically posted to lemmy as well?
